Quoted from Britannica, Keir Starmer is a man born on September 2, 1962 in London, England. He is a politician and lawyer who has been the leader of the Labor Party since 2020.

Starmer is the son of Rodney Starmer and Josephine Baker. His father worked as a toolmaker in a factory, while his mother was a nurse.

The name Keir himself was given by his parents from the name of the first leader of the Labor Party, Keir Hardie.

Keir Starmer, along with his three siblings and both parents, lived in Surrey and attended Reigate Grammar School.

He is the first member of his family to successfully obtain a bachelor’s degree at university. Starmer graduated from the University of Leeds with a law degree in 1985.

He then continued his studies and was able to obtain a postgraduate degree in civil law at St Edmund Hall, Oxford.

Between 1986 and 1987, Starmer was an editor at the left-wing magazine Socialist Alternatives.

With his wife Victoria Alexander, whom he married in 2007, Starmer has a son and a daughter. They now live in North London.

Starmer has a lifelong love of football. He has played in the amateur leagues for a long time and has been a loyal Arsenal supporter since childhood.

Starmer’s Career as a Lawyer

In 1987, Starmer began working as a barrister at the Middle Temple, one of the Inns of Court in London, which has the exclusive right to train lawyers and regulate their admission to the UK legal system.

Three years later, he set up his own legal practice, Doughty Street Chambers. In 2002, he was appointed as an advisor to Queen Elizabeth.

While practicing law, Starmer focused largely on human rights issues, both in the UK and abroad. He has represented prisoners sentenced to death in a number of Caribbean countries.

Between 2002 and 2008, Starmer was a member of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s death penalty advisory panel.

He also served as a human rights advisor to the Northern Ireland Policing Board and the Association of Chief Police Officers of Ireland (ACPO) from 2003 to 2008.

In 2008-2013, Starmer was Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Starmer’s Political Career

Starmer began his political career when he was elected as a member of parliament in the House of Commons on 7 May 2015 for the constituency of Holborn and St. Pancras. In 2015, Starmer was nominated as leader of the Labour Party to replace Ed Miliband.
